Many Roma do conceal their heritage as a survival tactic. He has been denied jobs, apartments, and much more simply because he does not hide his heritage. On the regular, Vlad and the members of his community are on the receiving end of phrases like “dirty g*psy”. The term for prejudice and discrimination against Roma is Antiziganism, and it is unfortunately alive and well today.

And still, these starving, beaten people found kindness to save this little girl. In Auschwitz, faith was banned for the prisoners. When the Nazis would come to take people to the gas chambers, and she was on the list, a Jewish person would take Vlad’s grandmother’s place. Her fellow prisoners–mostly Jewish people–quickly discovered that this young girl was the last of her family line. She was a small child, and had been separated from her parents and siblings, none of whom survived the camp.

He told me of his grandmother, whom he learned had survived Auschwitz as the last of her entire family. Vlad was kind enough to share a difficult story with me. While an exact count is not feasible, estimates place the Roma murdered in the Holocaust somewhere above 200,000 people. While “g*psy” is just as unacceptable, the German variant is exceptionally demeaning and infuriating.Īlongside Jewish people, SAGA/LGBTQIA+ people, and other victims of Nazi Germany, the Romani people were likewise systematically mass-murdered. The German pejorative used to refer to the Roma people is “zigeuner”, which roughly translates to “untouchable”. #Gpsy shires how to
Telling people how to feel about something that directly affects them is a bad habit. This should always be considered the most important reason, if not the only one you need. Starting off why g*psy is a slur: Roma deem it as such. Remember, if you wish to learn more, you have nearly the entirety of human knowledge at your fingertips. I have also added some additional informational links here and there. I might not be a historian, but I do have Roma friends and a penchant for research. So this is me, speaking up for my fellow human beings. See, at the time, people didn’t know or care how harmful the word was. I’m talking about 1930s content that takes place during the 1930s, and the word in question is just…used casually. I don’t mean films about the Wild West, where people were (apparently?) throwing around “n*gger” left and right. Related: Is “N*gro” a Slur? | Friendly Atheist Well, have you ever watched any of those old films that regularly employ the word “n*gro” to refer to black people? (N*gro is today considered a companion slur to n***er, for our younger folk reading this.) You probably don’t understand why it would be used so widely if it were really a slur.

You can probably name plenty of movies and TV shows that recently or currently employ the word “g*psy”.
